Ubuntu was my first experience with GNU/Linux.
it was a “good” path to rich the origin … Debian.

i keep use the live Ubuntu-CD when i have to troubleshoot some customers problems, but i switched to Debian because i wanted a standard distribution with a lot of documentation to learn Linux from the ground.

i think Ubuntu is “a perfect gate” between windows and Linux words.

i like Ubuntu a lot, and even if I’m from Africa ( Algeria ) – just like you mark from Africa :p – i do like Debian a little bit more :p

As you once said, “without Debian, Ubuntu couldn’t exist.”

We just upgraded a fairly-loaded (GNOME, KDE, etc.) Debian Sarge test box to Etch, across a remote SSH session, just to see how it would go. The upgrade went PERFECTLY. Everything–and I mean *everything*–works like a charm, and there was not one single hiccup.

When the time comes to upgrade to the next Ubuntu LTS version, I hope that our Dapper Drake upgrades go as smoothly as this Debian upgrade did. I’d expect that it would, given the Ubuntu dev team’s attention to detail.

In a post-apocalyptic world, one OS that you can surely count on to be chugging away is Debian. Maybe that’s what’s running the Morlock’s subterranean engines?

I don’t know how I should interpret your congrats… Isn’t it worth a bit more words? Ubuntu is based on debian… will this release affect the next ubuntu release?

Well, you mentionned it at all, at least.

Not that I’m a big debian fan (fedora over here). But I think they deserve more respect than the 8 words you put up here.

Just my 2 cents however…

most people don’t understand how important is that release, because they just look at the versions of the softwares. but Debian is much more than this.

I’m really happy with that release, now, testing repositories aren’t frozen anymore

Debian is the only distro that makes my laptop able to hibernate.

Ubunt doesn’t track -stable so to some extent Etch’s release is irrelevant to them. On the other hand Ubuntu is heavily based on Debian and as such the Debian project is certainly very relevant to Ubuntu in general.

Did you see that linux-watch.com makes the claim that your short post proves that Debian is irrelevant? Perhaps you have something to say about that, given that sjvn is so influential, if that is not what your post means.
