Mark,
  I am wondering what about a unfied production release for the Back To school 2009 time frame.
This would be that the production versions (LTS, RHEL 6/7, SUSE 12) Around Labor Day (September 7 2009) I believe that this would mean that there should be a test distributions about the April-May 2009 (a Fedora, regular Ubuntu, and OpenSUSE) meaning that the Apps stuff should be locked in March-April and the kernel coming out in Jan-March 2009.

Is this a reasonable schedule to ask for?

Mark,

I understand your approach, and I agree. It is very important for projects like KDE and GNOME to focus on a release schedule that coincides with distributions. I do have a question, though. Does this work for third party applications? For example, do you think that this approach would work or be useful for a multimedia application.

This question refers to smaller applications. Especially applications that might not be candidates for default release in distributions.There are plenty of applications that solve a problem for very few individuals. For example, MPD clients. Is it worth it for these applications to adopt this philosophy?

@Mr. Harshad Joshi:

1. Windows XP doesn't support MP3, DivX/Xvid, etc. without downloading codecs either... Actually, Windows XP requires you to find a codec for DivX yourself instead of downloading it automaticly!

2. True, there are more .exe & .msi installers than .deb installers for now, but this will improve over time. The main feature of .deb is when you want to _uninstall_ an application anyway... ;-)

3. There is support for gamers, although it's true that for new games, especially commercial games, Windows is still a better option in almost all cases.
