P is for…
Wednesday, October 5th, 2011It’s a perennial pleasure to pick pertinent and/or pithy placeholder names for Ubuntu releases. At least, I like to think of them as pertinent and/or pithy. I’ve had diverse feedback, shall we say. Nevertheless, it’s now a tradition, and it’s a pressing priority as we approach the release of Oneiric.
So, what will be our mascot for 12.04 LTS?
The letter P is pretty perfect. It’s also plentiful – my inbox has been rather full of suggestions – and we have options ranging from pacific to purposeful, via puckish and prudent. We’ll steer clear of the posh and the poncey, much as some would revel in the Portentious Palomino or the Principled Paca, those aren’t the winning names. Having spent the last six months elucidating the meaning of “oneiric” I think it might also be worth skipping the parenthetical or paralogical options too; so sadly I had to exclude the Perspicacious Panda and Porangi Packhorse (though being an LTS, that Packhorse was a near thing).
Being generally of a cheerful nature, I thought we’d avoid the Predatory Panther and Primeval Possum. Neither sounds like great company for a seven year journey, really. Same goes for the Peccable Peccary, Pawky Python and Perfidious Puku. So many bullets to dodge round here!
We’re looking for something phonetic, something plausible and something peaceful too. We’ll avoid the petulant, the pestilent, the phlegmy (phooey!), the parochial, the palliative and the psychotic. We’re aiming for mildly prophetic, and somewhat potent, without wanting to be all pedantic and particular. Phew.
So, what might work?
There are lots of lovely candidates. I have a fondness for phat. The Phat Platypus has a can-do kind of ring to it, but I don’t think it’ll fly.
I also like punchy and perky (the Perky Penguin is a nice nostalgic option) and persistent (better than permanent, peerless or penultimate) and playful and plucky and poised. Others like prescient and peaceable and pervasive (!) and pivotal. Pukka rings a nice old-world bell, but it’s possibly pejorative.
As you can see, it’s been something of a challenge to get this right.
Let’s ask the question differently – what are we trying to convey? 12.04 is an LTS. So we want it to be tough and long-lasting, reliable, solid as a rock and well defended. It’s also going to be the face of Ubuntu for large deployments for a long time, so we want it to have no loose ends, we want it to be coherent, neat.
We’ve told the story of the cloud in previous releases, and that comes to fruition in 12.04 with the first LTS that supports both the cloud guest, and cloud infrastructure, across ARM and x86 architectures. We’ve also told the story of Unity in previous releases, and that comes to fruition in a fast, lean interface that works well across clients both thick and thin. 12.04 is going to be a lot more than all that, but for the full reveal, you’ll need to wait till UDS! Nevertheless, we can take reliability, precision, and polish as a given.
Balancing all of those options, I think we have just the right mix in our designated mascot for 12.04 LTS. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the Precise Pangolin.
Now, I’ve recently spent a few hours tracking a pangolin through the Kalahari. I can vouch for their precision – there wasn’t an ant hill in the valley that he missed. Their scales are a wonder of detail and quite the fashion statement. I can also vouch for their toughness; pangolin’s regularly survive encounters with lions. All in all, a perfect fit. There’s no sassier character, and no more cheerful digger, anywhere in those desert plains. If you want a plucky partner, the pangolin’s your match. Let’s pack light for a wonderful adventure together. See you in Orlando!

I’m very anxious for this release, Unity will be more mature. One of the good features which I think (and many other users also things) is a feature for rearranging the icons in the Unity’s app menu and customize folders, like in the Launchpad of the OS X Lion, as well as choosing if they want to display the most utilized applications in this menu, since most users tend to pin their most used applications icons in the launcher – so this feature is somewhat redundant.

@Benjamin Kerensa the fedora process is quite nice for that ( http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/History_of_Fedora_release_names ). Another idea would be the one used by Mageia for the naming of server, ( https://mageia.org/pipermail/mageia-sysadm/2010-October/000023.html ), and let each group in Ubuntu decide on how they want to decide. Or this could be done like the perl people do for yapc, with a auction ( that lead to funny stuff, at least in our side of the ocean , like pink tshirt, esperanto website, etc ).
There is lots of way to creatively harness the community, and that’s quite bad that Canonical keep this as this really go against the message of being open and community based.

October 5th, 2011 at 9:03 pm
i had no problems with names so far. however this time i hoped to see a penguin. after all it’s a linux and tux will be disappointed to hear that. he is probably drunk now
but hey, in 13 years he definitely will get another chance.(cause he’ll live forever).
that said, i don’t think the names are important. i think the product itself counts. unity has not reached it’s potential yet, and it is an LTS. so i’m curious to see how will it go.
good luck, go pangolin, show lions what can you do.!
October 5th, 2011 at 9:06 pm

“Persistent Penguin” would have been a great name for an LTS. Because the penguin is still around after all these years, and growing while the old nemesis seem to be waning. I don’t think it would have been too presumptuous: Ubuntu/Canonical has had alot to do with bringing Linux to the masses that IMHO. For example My 4 year old daughter uses Ubuntu on her netbook.
Pink Panther would have been cool too, with an optional “pink ribbon” skin on unity… To support our favorite charity of course
Pubuntu anyone?
October 6th, 2011 at 3:49 am
I was really hoping that the name of 12.04, with the letter P, would be associated with the Penguin. May be Persistent Penguin (as Gunnar suggested) or something else. Inclusion of Penguin would be lot nicer and cooler!

Who the f@#$k doesn’t wanna make a profit. Ubuntu was never a “pure” community distro. It is a meritocracy not a democracy, but Canonical has kept it completely open sourced and free. If you want a community version then use Linux Mint or any other hundredth Ubuntu derivative out there. Stop trying to paint Canonical as the next “evil empire”.

Like some of the others in this thread, I too was hoping for a penguin name. I just thought that it was the perfect opportunity to give a slight nod towards Tux, and Linux in general that makes Ubuntu possible. But, the name Pangolin has really grown on me after saying it out loud (in my head) a few times.
Although, like Michael said “Precise” won’t help alot with google searches. But, perhaps we can use “Pangolin” as the short name, instead of using the adjective. Then maybe we’ll see http://extras.ubuntu.com pangolin/main i386 Packages.

Well, I can fully understand why a penguin was out of the question (there is enough loathing for the fact that for many people Ubuntu = Linux… imagine if they started associating Tux with Ubuntu exclusively too).

October 6th, 2011 at 1:43 pm
Hi Mark,
You wont find me commenting much but here are my reaction on this post & on the day when Steve is no more.May his soul rest in peace.
I think its time to focus much more on user interaction with UI and providing something that feels great to use as well as looks brilliant. This should atleast happen with the Unity Interface . Both keyboard as well as mouse be able to handle the GUI effectively. I think Gnome 3 has done a great deal & I hope Unity will be better than that.
Current desktop is far from being perfect though integrations with services is doing great but what matters is your experience with GUI and it sucks.
I would love to have a Ubuntu Dev of the Month/Year contest like “Google Summer of Code” considering your current efforts in improving development of Ubuntu. Also I would love to see it/take it to prestigious Engineering Institutes if you come up with something like that. There must be some motivation in developing Apps for Ubuntu & people should select what was the best app.Tutorials are there but I’ll really prefer if you simplify the contribution experience as well.People want to contribute to Ubuntu but if you’ll make things complicated they just can’t.Remember its just like playing a game on your phone when you’re free and then getting addicted to it
Also Ubuntu Brainstorm is a great place. Please make sure those brilliant ideas dont get wasted.I’ll love to see team dedicated to “Rapid integration of Ideas”
I assure you on this that half of your problems will be solved due to this only.
I still think that there is too much in my mind to write but best policy is to Stay Hungry Stay Foolish
Expecting a reply

“Let’s ask the question differently – what are we trying to convey? 12.04 is an LTS. So we want it to be tough and long-lasting, reliable, solid as a rock and well defended. It’s also going to be the face of Ubuntu for large deployments for a long time, so we want it to have no loose ends, we want it to be coherent, neat.”
Does this mean that Canonical will start promoting the LTS as the stable version and “normal” releases as experimental/in development/for enthusiasts versions? It would be really great if you clearly marketed them in that manner, so people wouldn’t judge Ubuntu badly because of the instability and regressions in the “normal” release, and it would make the LTS much more significant, resulting in a greater PR impact. Anyway, here’s what I think Canonical should do:

Since Ubuntu is an OS for “thinking” people, it is only fitting to have code names that stimulate further thinking… I had a recent online encounter with pangolins, as they are the only mammals with keratin scales, a bit of trivia that seems to reflect the uniqueness of Ubuntu!!

For non english speaking Ubuntu users these exotic animal names are very unknown. We don’t feel anything with a heron, jackalope, ocelot, pangolin. We do know the [we do know the lynx, meercat, lion, dog, monkey and Penguin. Couldn’t you use some more familiar and less strange animals? I would have loved the Precious Penguin. It says all we feel about our Ubuntu machines an devery linux user knows the penguin don’t they? ….

I think all the names are silly, obtuse, hard to pronounce for most english speakers and a source of puzzlement for non-english speakers but just like the toy story fetish from teh other group, pretty harmless and fun.
I dont think anyone takes them too seriously and the tone this is done in is perfect: dont take it too seriously but do remember that its still your company its representing (sorry Pink Ponies!)
I would have like a penguin reference but the word seems a bit overused by now. Gnu does lend to a lot of interesting word play and it would be a more subtle wink than Penguin.
Those names are used mainly by geeks and those who think they are (theyre more gadget hounds), Joe User and your mum and my dad just remember that its Linux and that their flavour is called Kubuntu (sorry folks, when given the choice the 19 family members Ive switched have chosen KDE by a huge margin, the fact that they were Win users probably explains this). Whether they use 10.04 or 12.04 means little to them and having to remember or even just use Linux AND Kubuntu AND Natty Narwahal is sort of like asking them to say the GNU-Linux operating system: both terms are correct but its just too long for no reason.

Hi Mark. I know this will be a great Ubuntu release. I just submitted an idea on Ubuntu Brainstorm.
It’s about the look of indicators, dropdown menus, tool bars, etc. The new Dash has a great blur effect, why not bring this look to these desktop elements for a little touch? Or at least add it as a CCSM option?
The thing is that the panel supports transparency and blur, but it looks inconsistent with maximized windows and indicators, etc. It makes no sense to set the panel transparent at all because of this (I know it’s an experimental feature, but still). When no maximized window is open and the panel is transparent it looks very sleek and modern. I would love to see more of this!
Here’s the link to the idea (awaiting aproval):

When I saw unity in 10.04 for the first time I was all ‘yuck’.
Now 11.10 is on the street and unity has really matured a lot. It still hast some quirks and the usability still needs polish, but now it really starts to have potential.
I’m looking forward to 12.04! Linux has a bright future.

“Precise Pangolin” is pretty cool, I’ll admit. But I’m afraid that I’ll always have to carry a little cheat sheet with the name on – just in case somebody would ask me. For that reason I sure would have preferred something like “Prancing Pony”, even though it doesn’t sleep curled up into a ball. Well, let’s have a ball then, if we must.
